Tomorrow's 16 Mile Route; Cancellations; Lightning

For tomorrow's 16 miler, this will be the route:
  1. Head south from starting point at North Avenue to 7.5 mile marker (Ohio St just after the fountain).
  2. Head back north on the running path to the very end (the circle at Hollywood).
  3. Head back south on the running path to our starting location.

Cancellations:
  1. No runs labor day weekend (20 miler on Saturday, Sept 5; nor the Fleet Feet run on Monday, Sept 7)--more than likely, there will be an informal gathering of folks for the 20 mile run so just listen or ask around at the upcoming runs.
  2. No 20 miler with Nike on Sept 19.  We are highly encouraging everyone to participate in CARA's Ready to Run on Sunday the 20th.  It's a great, organized event.  20 miles point to point with support the entire way, food and entertainment at the end (South Shore Cultural Center) and buses back to the start (Foster).

Lightning
If there is lightning at 6am on Saturdays, the run will be cancelled.

Begin forwarded message:

--------------------
Subject: Training runs continue every Thursday during the spring

Hello Friends,

Just want to drop you a reminder that you can run with Nike Run Club this spring every Thursday at Niketown at 630pm. As always, there are 3, 5, and 7 miles routes, footwear trials (you should all refresh your shoes if you haven't in the past 6 months), bagels, water, and a great social atmosphere - and it's all complimentary.

We know everybody is itching to find out what is coming up for the summer. We're still working on finalizing details but we can tell you that for Chicago there will be 4 training runs per week starting in mid-June, including a downtown Saturday morning marathon long run led by pacers. Also, new this year there will be 2 runs per week (one weekday and one Saturday long run) in the suburbs. Specific details to come in a couple weeks!

Quick shout out to everyone who is running Boston on Monday and those heading to Nashville for the Country Music Marathon & 1/2 Marathon next weekend!

Hope this message finds you healthy and excited for the upcoming season.

Best,
Nike Running

Chicago Marathon Re-cap + NYC Marathon, Here I Come!

Yes, it's long overdue--just like one of my library books.  However, I am pretty sure that I'm overdue by a couple years with that book.  I'm not THAT late here.

So---Chicago Marathon 2008---What Do I Have to Say?!?

By far, I must say that as a race, it was SO much better than last year.  And, I hope that the same, if not more, amount of emails that were sent to complain last year were sent this year to give kudos to the organizers, numerous volunteers, etc. for ensuring effective communication of course conditions and providing an adequate arsenal of fluids!

When I saw the flags had changed from yellow to red, I grew a bit worried--"Will I actually get to complete the entire course this year before the color changes to black?!?  I BETTER!"  Then, there was the part of me secretly hoping that I could stop because in the moment...well...IT SUCKED!  My quads cramped quite regularly beginning around 15 miles and when I went to stretch them the opposite hamstring would cramp.  OUCH!  My stretch ended up simply being a gradual pullover to the side of the course and slowly squatting to get a nice stretch.

I can hypothesize and overanalyze until I am purple in the face to wonder why I cramped so much.  It was probably all that salt loss and I just may not have been replenishing my water adequately even though I thought I was.  Nevertheless, I am armed with some salt tablets for NYC.

I was pretty much solo along the course throughout with an occasional bump into a Nike RunCHI friend here and there, but it was me, the handy iPod, and those random spectators that connected with me simply by reading my name sharpied onto my arms.  "Ken, bro...you're doin' great!"  This I would hear regularly as I walked through water stops and maybe afterwards even.  Never did I hear, "WHY THE HELL ARE YOU WALKING?!?"  which was a big fear.

What highlights can I remember?

Well, LAKEVIEW ROCKS!  I was SO energized by those crowds, it was AMAZING!  It wasn't like the many other crowds I ran passed which were dead silent.  My partner, Scott, described it perfectly as a graduation ceremony where they scream for their one person and then leave.  Yeah, that kinda sucked.  But, that's why I had iPod with Nike+ to talk to me.  I simply popped those babies in my ears and the silence ceased.

FLEET FEET--I looked forward to getting to that point because I had my racing team singlet on and wanted to be spotted so I could collect an awesome picture later in the month!  I hope you got me, Fleet Feet!!!!

CHINATOWN--Those are my people!  What I remember from here was that I was walking in front of the camera but I think I did a good job of covering my bib.  OH YEAH...AND, I remember the spectators being SO far into the middle of the street.  BACK UP FOLKS!  YOU WERE HOGGING SOME OF OUR NEEDED SHADE!  I also remember having a point to run to, that being the bridge with shade so I could pull over and stretch AGAIN.  As I was doing so, in front of spectators that left me alone (thank you!), one Asian lady came up to me in broken English and said, "You do a goot job...onry 2 mires to a go..."  I said thank you while thinking to myself--WOMAN, DO YOU KNOW IT'S ACTUALLY 4 MORE?!?  But, it was really cute and sweet of her.  It was all with good intentions and I appreciated it.  I went on my merry way to run through what felt like the desert until we made our way to state and part of Michigan which had some nice shade.

"ONE MILE TO GO" SIGN--  That----WAS---THE---LONGEST---MILE---OF---MY---LIFE!  Here is shuffling Ken since about mile 23.5 ish.  I can't remember.  Ken isn't walking because he's suppose to run into his supporters between 22 and 26.  I looked for EVERY yellow sign I could.  I turned down my iPod.  I didn't see anything.  I didn't HEAR anything?  Up Roosevelt I go...were people cheering or quiet again?  I don't remember.  I just remember still looking for signs.  As I neared the top...nope...not them.  I became bummed but quickly I caught a glimpse of...

"FINISH"

I forgot about that disappointment of "where the hell are they?!?" and made my way to the finish.  Could I kick?  Umm..NO...  It was very much an "I think I can, I think I can, I KNOW I can!" moment.

I CROSSED THE FINISH LINE!

Overall, it was THE hardest thing I have EVER done/endured in my life.  BUT, it was an awesome sense of accomplishment for my first marathon!!!

It is now Friday evening, October 31, and I am finishing this up as promised.  The NYC Marathon is on Sunday and we are in our hotel room about to hit the sack and I hope that I can FINALLY sleep in!!!!  I really need to because it's the most important night of sleep.

I'm REALLY excited about NYC.  And, I've been approaching it from the standpoint of just another long run...just 3 weeks after tapering from Chicago's long run in the horrible heat.  The weather is going to be PHENOMENAL with a high of 52.  It is going to be VERY interesting learning what a marathon feels like when it's relatively cool out!!!

Nevertheless, I am going to another marathon and we'll see what ends up next up here.  What will be my next chapter?  How do I feel?  What do YOU think I should do???

Don't worry.  I'll re-cap NYC hopefully sooner than this tardy one.

Before I close, I do want to thank my supporters who donated to my cause for Chicago--American Liver Foundation, Illinois Chapter!  We have raised $140k+ and were just shy of our $150k goal.  Thank YOU for playing an awesome part!

Until next time!

The ladybug bit me!

"We've come full circle..."

That's what I thought to myself during my 3 mile lunch run today.  Well, that along with, "OW!  WTF?!?"  That's when the ladybug was biting me.

Nevertheless...we've come full circle...but...maybe full circle would have really been October 2.  That was last year's marathon.

You get the point.

Today is the Thursday before the marathon-- and, the Thursday before the marathon last year, many of us were up super early to show off our Nike decked out selves on NBC, ruin a cooking segment by putting sour cream where it shouldn't be, and to watch me scream when a dead bird landed behind me after hitting the building (poor thing).

That night, Danny Salazar and I represented the Northside and Southside at Niketown as we shared the stage with Nike elites pumping you all up for the big day.  The day we were rallying you up for sure was memorable, wasn't it?  It was a tad warm and we'll leave it at that.

Well, here we are again.  This morning a few of us were up early on NBC to promote this evening's pep rally at Niketown.  In a few hours, we'll be there receiving our surprise gifts from Nike and hearing from their sponsored elites.  You want your gift, right?  So, be there!  And, you should all know now that Nike knows how to throw an event!  It's not something to be missed!

This year has been and will continue to be huge...Nike's sponsorship of the Chicago Marathon for the next 5 years (I think the Shuffle too) has proven to be AWESOME.  Our training runs have turned out to be THE place to be because of the great group of pacers, product trials, food, great raffles, all the runners, etc etc etc!

Have no fear, even though Sunday will come and go, Club RunCHI will not cease.  Paced runs will continue out of Niketown on Thursdays and you should keep it penciled in that Nike will more than likely offer free training programs for the Shuffle and Marathon next year as well.

From a runner who will turn 2 (in running years) in January, wish me luck in my first official marathon on Sunday--I had a goal of 4 hours, but I'm going to focus on that B goal of finishing for now so I don't get too overwhelmed if the day proves to be too warm.  I wish you all the best as well!

See you all out there (and, stay tuned for some possible other updates prior to race day as well)!

The day is ALMOST here!

...at least the first one.

I can't believe that we are about 1 week away from the Chicago
Marathon and 3 weeks after then to the NYC Marathon.

I caught myself several times during training this summer asking
myself, "WHY?!?" That started about 4 weeks into training (mid July),
dwindled, and then mainly during long runs in THE HEAT AND HUMIDITY!

The first round was from the exhaustion of training for/pacing 2
seasons of half marathon programs for CES after last year's marathon.
I simply needed a break. That break will come FINALLY come on NOV
THIRD! After NYC, it's party free time!

The second round was just because of the difficulty of those runs in
the heat and humidity. I just don't run well in heat with high
humidity. And, I hope to some day learn how to do it like a stealth
bomber without issues.

Nevertheless, the first of my two marathons within one month adventure
will soon be over. My several nights of teeth grinding, anxiety, and
nightmares can, hopefully, be over and I can move on.

It sounds like I'm ending a significant chapter in my life in about 1
month.

I'm not.

It will continue. I will just let Ken rest a little so he can come
back strong and decide which race will be next...but after that well
needed rest time. I'm longing for that mental recovery time to get re-
ignited. I'm looking forward to again having another activity to look
forward to instead of running. Recently, I proposed a cooking class
that my partner, Scott, and I could go to so I could actually learn to
cook.

What else can I do?!?

Well, whatever the options may be...running will undoubtedly continue.
I'm not committing, but the marathon may come back to life for Ken
Chin in 2009 as well.

Everyone: have fun and best of luck.

Stay tuned here for more light updates leading up to both of my big
days.

My past week...

Today marked the beginning of taper time after the Nike Ready Run 20-miler.  It was a tough run for me today because my body grew a tad accustomed to the longer stops that we made during our long training runs.  And, today, I forced myself to keep going as much as I could and did not stop my watch.  Overall, I did about a 9:38 pace.  Yes, my goal was 9:00's, BUT, I'm being VERY nice to myself because it was meant to be as close to mimicking the actual marathon without those long stops and I think I did a pretty damn good job, particularly in the heat.  KNOCK ON WOOD THAT IT WILL BE COOLER ON RACE DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My week leading up to this was a wonderful post-Hurricane Ike leftover puddle dodging 7 miler on Monday out of Fleet Feet.

Tuesday was a quick abs class followed by strengthening and then meeting with my awesome dietician friend from the Nike Northside/Southside challenge, Molly.  I got great info on how I'm missing my fruits, vegetables, protein, and dairy so I hope to continue on a healthier more balanced path!

Wednesday was supposed to be a 7.5 mile race pace run.  It was a cool night and my legs just took off.  I ended up doing the run at an average 8:20.  It probably was the BEST run I have EVER had.  I hope to have that feeling several more times to come!

Thursday through Saturday were nixe on the running ay, partly due to my out and back trip to Buffalo for work.

I couldn't be more excited to move on to taper mode.  I am one step closer to 2 AWESOME races, the Chicago and NYC marathons, on October 12 and November 2 respectively.  I hope at each of those I will not be in the "why do I do this mode?" and will be enjoying EVERY part of the experience.  In particular, I mention this because I felt that way today but had to remind myself that it was okay that I was feeling bad and I could make it and if I was feeling that bad, there were plenty of others in the same place.

Here's to respecting the marathon--the beast that it is!!!!

Ok, I was excited...

when this morning's 8 miler was cancelled. Now, now...gimme a break. This would have been the FIRST long run that I skipped ALL training season. I may even run it tomorrow if the weather is as good as it looks on Accuweather.

Lynn R, Matt P and I did the Nookies breakfast and conversation thing and then I went to the gym to get an upper body, abs, and 20 minute cycling in. There was no way I could have gone home first because I would have hit the couch and passed out because I was up at 4:30am. Yes, a half hour later than usual.

We shall see what tomorrow brings...but I may enjoy the rest and just stretch so I can ease into next Sunday's Nike Ready to Run 20 miler. Having completed last week's 20, I'm actually EXCITED for next week's! Let's see what my gameplan ends up being--stick with the group or run through the water stops (if possible!).

Before I end, I should mention that after last Monday's cold, rainy run, I did complete the 10 miles running from my place downtown up to almost Foster Ave and back to Belmont to catch the bus. The idea of a full loop just didn't sound appealing by the time I got up to about Diversey so I made the decision to change the course a little. It was PERFECT! I got my 6x1200s in (not the 8 that I thought) followed by 800 cooldowns and felt good overall. It was a bit cool but great overall. I'll take cool over hot and humid ANY day!

Wednesday was a no workout day--we were supposed to get into a special viewing of Burn After Reading, but that was a bust because the theater was at capacity.

Thursday was a nice 5 miler with a negative split--we did an overall 8:52 pace. It was a bit humid but ok overall.

We are in the home stretch to the marathon...and almost home stretch for my running of the NYC marathon as well!

I'm still able to use my ligaments with no major issues so I hope, KNOCK ON WOOD, I continue to be GOLDEN!

RUN CLUB CANCELLED FOR TODAY...

Due to flood and tornado warnings, today's run has been cancelled.

Sleep up for next week's 20!!!

My Challenge of the Day...

This was the first time I did a challenge using my facebook status message:

Ken Chin is making a deal and will do his run with the speed work if he can get $26.20 in donations to his cause by 6 CST http://www.active.com/donate/run2008/KenChinUSA

In less than 5 minutes, I had a donation for that amount!  Now, I have NO out and have to do my 10 miles with 8x1200s with 800 cooldowns between each tonight!

Thanks, Megan!!!

I hope the sign continues to say "DON'T WALK!"

Don't you hate it when you're on a run and you come to a crosswalk, hoping that it will either change to or stay as "Don't Walk!"???

That was last night for me but that was fine.  Most of the run was a cold rain and I ran with good 'ol Lynn R.  I merged my 9 minute group with her 8:30 group to force us to do a tempo run for 6 miles.  Overall, it was a fun run--just cold and wet.  We came in RIGHT ON at an average 8:30.  GO LYNN!

I'm debating if I'm going to do the Nike speed workout out of Running Away tonight...the schedule says it's a total of 10 miles...hmmm...  I MAY run solo and set my watch to alert me for the 1200 repeats and 800 coolowns.  We shall see!!!

Recap on this past week

This past week was a great one for training!

We had a simple 6 miles on Saturday followed by the Nike+ Human Race on Sunday (overall, a fun time!).  The rest of the week was covered in a previous post up to Wednesday.

Thursday was a fun Niketown run--running through the pouring Hurricane Gustav remnants plus the waves splashing and soaking our feet!  We just did 5 that day.

Saturday (aka yesterday) was a great 20 miler.  The weather could not have been more perfect!!!!  I should have kept to my planned schedule of taking my e-gels every 45 minutes instead of sporadically when I remembered.  I think a reminder on my handy watch is due for this so I don't forget and remember too late.  Don't forget that they say it's TOO LATE if you take your gels when you're hungry!  And, that's hard to learn during a 20 miler when you get light headed here and there!  NEVERTHELESS, we had a solid group complete the course that I accidently elongated (sorry!) but I stopped everyone who wanted to at 20 miles and we did a forced cooldown of less than a mile to our jamba juice, water, bananas, etc....generously provided by Club RunCHI!

The 15 person brunch at FlatTop was the perfect refueling.  We even had the opportunity to taste the lunch menu which doesn't happen often because we're not there that late!

Upon my return home, of course, I forced myself to take a 3-bag ice bath and I am REALLY beginning to think that it actually works!  I'm not sore today!  I may be a little tight here or there...but that can be easily resolved with a little time in the XSport hot tub and some stretching before tomorrow night's Nike Training Run out of Fleet Feet!  FUN TIMES!

I should conclude with a plug of the Illinois Chapter of the American Liver Foundation...  Yes, running has become a bit of an addiction, but it has been a healthy one!  And, I wanted to further my purpose and help where I could.  That's why I am also running this year's Chicago Marathon to help raise awareness of Liver Disease.  I'm asking for $1 from you and your friends to help fund research.  If you want it to be more symbolic, consider $2.62, $26.20, or $262.00.  Those numbers represent the 26.2 miles that I will run--each step toward a greater good!  To contribute and help me reach my $5000 goal (I'm FAAAAAAAAR away from meeting it yet!), use this link:  https://www.active.com/donate/run2008/KenChinUSA.  Thanks in advance!

My log and catching up on what I didn't blog about.

Overall lower body with ankle stabilizing exercise.
+ abs class.
+Pushup. Challenge (tough!)

Yesterday...
Did 3x1200 with half mile cool down after each + 1.6 warmup to and from.

Monday
Was overall upper after 20 mind on the bike.

Sunday...duh!
Da human race! With the crowds and heat, completed the course in
52:17. Overall, a good time except for the crowds being walls blocking
a times.

I don't think j ever posted that I got my start corral for the
marathon (D) after the CDC half...they adjusted the qualification due
to the course being too long.

Let's say I'm caught up here for now and ignore all the other days I
didn't blog, k?!?
